Our Father’s Bond (Part 1)

“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” – 1 John 5:4

The Meaning of Relationship

“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” – John 1:12-13

The word relationship is synonymous with these words; association, bond, connection and affiliation. The English word “relationship” evolved from the Middle English word “relacion,” which also meant “connection”, this is according to Google.  When you’re in a relationship with someone, you are related, connected and associated to that person.

There is something that connects you with that person. These people are bound together (to each other) with and/or by a bond (heart to heart connection). Between a mother and her child there is a bond. At school you have a relationship with your school or class mates because you are all in the same school or class; you’re associated by the school and class. For example, to be a member of an institution you need to affiliate with it. John 3:16, Romans 5:8, and James 4:8

What Is Our Relationship to God?

When talking of our relationship to God (and with God), the Trinity, we are essentially talking about the bond and connection we have with God. Which Himself created for us to have with Him. This bond is created by God, in and through Christ Jesus, His Son. We are therefore, associated with the King of kings. We are associated with the Kingdom of God. We are associated with the Creator of the universe, the heavens and the earth and all mankind. We are associated with God Himself; and we are associated and affiliated with the very nature of God. We are of the essence of God. As He is so are we, in this world.

In this, love is made complete with us so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, because as he is, so also are we in this world. – 1 John 4:17

We are of the household of God, meaning in Christ Jesus we are the children of God by faith. We are members of the Body of Christ and He, Jesus, is the Head of the Body. We have received the Spirit of God, whom Jesus calls the Spirit of Truth, who searches the mind of God. When we received Jesus Christ the Son as our Lord, we directly received God the Father who immediately gave us, and sealed as His, with and by, the Holy Spirit.

We are not only associated by chance. We are made in the image and likeness of God. Therefore, we are, by virtue of being human, related to God. It’s quite fascinating that when you look at the etymology of the word, you find that the Latin meaning of the word means “a calling back, a report”. Sin separated us from our association and connection, but Jesus brings us back and restores it all.

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. – Genesis 1:27
